At the recent Textile Exchange Conference, Research Soil Scientist and Program Director Dr. Dianna Bagnall joined industry experts on a panel to share insights on soil health management systems (SHMS) in cotton production. She discussed how partial budgets show the costs, savings, and revenue changes associated with adopting SHMS. Data from the US Office of Textiles and Apparel (OETXA) reveals that prices for various garment categories have dropped significantly. Men’s cotton woven trousers saw a 7.7 per cent decrease, while women’s cotton woven trousers fell by 4.4 per cent. Other notable declines included men’s cotton woven shirts at 3.8 per cent, cotton knitted sweaters at 7 per cent, and cotton knitted T-shirts at 3.9 per cent. As a result of these price reductions, garment shipments from Bangladesh to the US decreased by 3.33 per cent, totaling US $ 6.14 billion. In a broader context, overall apparel imports to the US declined by 0.33 per cent, reaching US $ 67.04 billion during the same timeframe. In case you missed it: Materials matter. The fashion industry is increasingly looking at sustainable materials that are not only responsibly sourced but can be recycled at the end of their life cycle. One major player in this shift is the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), which works to ensure cotton is sustainably sourced. Through independent assessments, including Reconomy brand Valpak’s Better Cotton Assessment service, BCI members demonstrate their commitment to responsible cotton production. 🌿 Advocate for Natural or Recycled Fibres 🌿 The allure of fast fashion often blinds us to its environmental impact. On average, Australians purchase 56 items of clothing each year and dispose of 23 kg of textiles. Alarmingly, 60% of these textiles are synthetic, derived from fossil fuels, and a single 5kg wash can release 6 million microplastic fibres into our waterways. Let's make a conscious shift towards clothing made from natural fibres, which are more durable and don't release microplastics. Alternatively, consider garments made from recycled fibres or plastics. Textile technology developer Xefco has raised $10.5 million in its latest funding round led by Australian deep technology fund Main Sequence backing its technology to reduce textile emissions. Xefco has been commercialising its patented water-free textile finishing and dyeing solution, Ausora, aiming to create a greener supply chain for the fashion industry. Other new investors joined Main Sequence in the funding including Breakthrough Victoria, Virescent Ventures, investing on behalf of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and existing shareholders, Investible and Voyagers Climate-Tech Fund.
